Breakers - Lawton 8th Grade- Blue Team

By Breakers, 05/05/17, 10:00PM EDT

The Rhode Island Breakers 8th grade girls team, coached by Steve Lawton (Head Coach) and Dan Comella (Assistant Coach) are off to an excellent start this Spring Season.

So far the team, which is comprised of 11 girls from 6 different cities, has accumulated a 15-1 record and are the champions of all 4 tournaments they have played in.  They have faced competition levels ranging from 8th grade to 8th/9th grade brackets in these tournaments.  Head Coach Steve Lawton attributes their success so far to 2 things – a team first attitude combined with playing with Passion! Something he emphasizes in every practice and before every game.

Below are results from the 2017 MPS Coaches vs. Cancer Spring Classic Tournament played on 4/29 & 4/30 where they went undefeated and finished in first place in the 8th/9th bracket:

Game #1 -  RI Breakers 63   North Shore Blizzard 52

Breakers Leading Scorers: Elayna Comella 19 pts ; Riley Sprague 14 pts and Alexia Ledo 10 pts.

The Breakers lead by just  1 at the half (27-26) but steadily pulled away in the second half to win the contest 63-52. It was a balanced scoring attack with Comella leading all scorers with 19 points (including 3 three pointers), closely followed by Sprague who finished with 14 points (including 5/6 from the free throw line) and Ledo with some strong post up play down low. Casey Westall, the ultimate “team first” player, played a major role throughout the game with her spot on passing leading to many of the points scored by her Breaker Teammates. Julia Stanger continued her physical play down low, pulling down a number of key rebounds throughout the game.

Game #2 – RI Breakers 44   Team Providence 41

Breakers Leading Scorers: Elayna Comella 12 pts ; Kalen Greenhalgh 9 pts and Ella Philippi 7 pts.

The Breakers trailed by 1 at the half (21-20) but came on strong at the end of the game with key baskets from Comella (3 pointer to tie game at 39-39), Hannah Iomonaco (2 pointer to tie game at 41-41) and the ultimate game winner by Greenhalgh(3 pointer to put the team ahead for good at 44-41). From there, the Breakers cranked up the defense, led by an outstanding effort from Kayla Saddler, Tori Bird and Riley Sprague down the stretch.

Game #3 – RI Breakers 61   MPC Gold 46

Breakers Leading Scorers: Elayna Comella 13 pts; Alexia Ledo 8 pts; Kalen Greenhalgh 7 pts

In this game, the Breakers got off to an early start thanks to a 3 pointer by Tori Bird and continued to score early and often as they pulled out to a 38-15 advantage at the half and never looked back. The girls closed out the game with an impressive 61-46 victory over host team MPC Gold who was by far the tallest team the Breakers have faced this year.  The clear size advantage that MPC Gold possessed was offset by outstanding physical play down low by Julia Stanger, Ella Philippi and Alexia Ledo who each pulled down a bevy of boards combined with the intense running game lead by Hannah Iomonaco, Casey Westall and Kayla Saddler.  In true team fashion, every player on the team scored.
